A very long time ago, magic users and sympathetic humans alike traveled west in search of peace. They found a suitable place protected by a vast, deep wood and planted a willow tree in a field of heather to mark their new home. A long time later, the rest of the world caught up but even then the small town has remained relatively secluded. Nearby towns and cities think Heatherfield is a red-neck town uninterested in joining the rest of the world. They're partially right, but also very, very wrong.
Heatherfield is a place of magic. And the people would feel stifled anywhere else.
Those who are in the know, maybe magic users themselves, flock to Heatherfield several times a years for holidays. And whether burning candles and singing or dancing naked under the moon, it's always a party.
Now magic is a trait some are born with. Like any trait, it morphs to the personality of the user. All people born with magic are able to perform basic spells and rituals: some levitation, some conjuring, some brewing, and some seeing. Just simple stuff – beyond that it gets specialized. To those who don't know, there are six very general types of magic users …
Elementals: have a particular affinity towards a certain elements of nature (fire, water, air, earth/metal)
Seers: have varying amounts of access into how the future unfolds and tend to be good at games of chance and avoiding horrible accidents
Apothecaries: they intuitively know what plants are on sight, tend to plants very well, and know how to concoct them into useful brews
Charmers: very alluring people, usually also attractive. Charmers are ace at spells of manipulation (i.e. love spells) and usually get what they want even without a spellbook
Psychics: the really powerful ones can read a person's mind like an open book. They also are able to project their thoughts into other people's mind – even go so far as control dreams
Shape Changers: these are the most physical users. They have heightened senses, strength, and speed, and, through practice, can morph into different animals
