One she'd gotten more comfortable in her relationship with Sam, Chloe had started inviting herself over to his grandmother's house. Mormor was easily one of her favorite people, particularly now that she was pregnant. The woman was a fantastic cook, and Chloe was quickly finding that growing another person seemed to require a great deal of food. Currently, the woman was in her kitchen baking something that smelled delightful. Chloe had invited herself over for dinner and was planning to spend the night, but she wasn't sure if the evening would go as planned now that she was alone with Sam.
It had taken her quite a while to wrap her head around the fact that, while she'd always been terrified of falling in love and had vehemently opposed marriage for pretty much her entire life, she was very much in love with Sam. He'd reacted well enough when she'd told him, but she'd also recently come to the conclusion that she wouldn't mind marrying Sam. The only person she'd actually voiced that thought to was her brother, and Mason seemed to think that Sam would like to know that little detail. Consequently, Chloe had spent the last three days preoccupied by whether or not she ought to tell him, and if she did, what exactly she ought to say.
With Mormor in the kitchen, and Sam sitting at the end of the couch, this was really the perfect opportunity. But Chloe was more than a little nervous. With a sigh, she stretched out on the couch, resting her head on Sam's lap and staring up at him, taking in his features. The more time she spent with him, the more sure she was that she was serious about marrying him, but the more she thought about it, the more she wanted to clam up. She wasn't even entirely sure how to start the conversation, which had led to a lot more silence than was normal for her. Sooner or later, Sam was bound to notice and force her to bring it up anyway.

Sam really had no complaint to Chloe's random arrivals recently. His grandma was overjoyed at the prospect of a grandchild and was cooking up a storm, all kinds of Swedish dishes that were supposed to be good for pregnant ladies. It was all rather amusing really, mormor's excitement was more than enough and got them all in a good mood. He'd yet to tell his parents, they were rather conservative jews, nothing about this would really please them. Well, that's what he assumed. Mormor knew, and Mason knew--which meant Caim probably knew.
That was enough for now, in case.... In case things went wrong.
Sam hated to consider that was a possibility, he loved the idea of a family with her, he loved the idea of a baby with her. She came over and stretched out on the couch and put her head in his lap. He stroked her hair softly, smiling down at her. "Hey babe, why so quiet? You feeling okay?" Sam asked. Her energy seemed good to him, but he couldn't help but ask. She wasn't usually so quiet.

A deep blush flooded Chloe's cheeks the moment Sam asked if she was feeling okay. Of course she realized it was a fair question; she'd just been thinking about the fact that it wouldn't take him long to become suspicious. Even so, being caught in such deep thought always made her rather uncomfortable. Besides that, the realization that she couldn't really avoid talking to him much longer made her more than a little nervous. Letting out a long breath, Chloe offered Sam a smile. "I'm fine," she assured him, which was true. As far as health went, she was fine. She'd been laying off the coffee and cigarettes as she'd been told to, even though she didn't appreciate it. Losing both the nicotine and the caffeine at the same time made for wretched mood swings and monstrous headaches, but she figured it would be better before too long. Besides, from what she'd heard, those headaches were infinitely preferable to morning sickness, which she had yet to experience.
She let a couple of quiet seconds roll by, just watching Sam and silently steeling her nerves for the discussion she expected would ensue. Finally, after another sigh, she continued, "I've been thinking... About this baby thing... What if we were, you know... A proper family?" she asked, another blush coloring her cheeks. It sounded silly phrased that way, but she couldn't quite bring herself to say "What if we got married?", so it would have to be close enough for now.

Sam could tell something was on her mind and waited for her to say it, and when she did, he had to decipher what she meant. Usually Chloe was very clear. A proper family? Since when had that mattered to her? Chloe was scared by saying she loved him and now she wanted a proper family? What did that even mean?
"Well, I think the only requirements for a family is love," Sam said. That was how they'd always been okay with not making things official in the eyes of society, which is what Chloe had always wanted until now. Did she mean proper by law? The gears in his brain clicked and whirled as he tried to figure out what she was saying...
Was she saying she wanted to get married?
"Is this your way of proposing to me?" Sam asked with a laugh. Mostly, he couldn't believe that was the truth. But he looked down at her seriously. "I would say yes you know, but I've been working on my own plan, if you ever came around to the idea."

Of course the fact that she hadn't told him exactly what she meant was bound to make things difficult. Chloe had never made a secret of the fact that she was determined not to get married, so she hadn't really expected Sam to assume that was what she meant. After all, they had decided that mutual affection was enough for them, and now that she'd actually admitted to loving him, they were their own family of sorts. Just not a legal family. At this point, of course, it didn't actually matter. It wasn't as if there was any reason they had to get married. They didn't need one another for insurance or for money, and they were doing perfectly well without making anything official. But for once in her life, Chloe had finally settled on the realization that she wanted more. She wanted the whole world to know how she felt about Sam now that she'd allowed herself to feel that way.
Biting her bottom lip, she listened as he reasoned through her rambling. As she'd expected, his first answer was one she'd heard before. The same answer that let her get away with refusing to get married. As she continued to watch, though, he seemed to finally process what she'd actually been getting at. Like Mason, he'd jumped to the conclusion that she was trying to propose to him. Again, Chloe's cheeks flooded with color. "No!" she insisted. "Come on! I'm not that backwards! I'm not going to propose to you!" Rolling her eyes, she giggled a bit, but it only took a couple of seconds for the laughter to subside. Finally, she offered him a small smile and clarified, "I'm only saying that if you wanted to... you know... get married," she paused, the gravity of the words weighing on her a bit, "I wouldn't actually mind..." A small smile played on her lips as she let the words hang in the air. Just like when she'd told him she loved him, she found that actually saying this wasn't as hard as she'd expected it to be.
Letting the silence fall between them afterwards, however, was hard, and Chloe found herself beginning to ramble again. "I mean why wouldn't I want to hang out with you for the rest of my life? And I'm kind of ridiculous, anyway. No one else would really put up with me. Plus I really don't want any other girl trying to take you away from me..."

Sam laughed at her outburst. He didn't think there was anything wrong a girl proposing. But he didn't get much time to think on that when she basically said she wanted to marry him. She wanted to spend her life with him. Make a family and a life. Sam just leaned down and kissed her tenderly. "No other girl could take me away from you." Sam said softly.
Plans or no plans, he wanted to propose to her right there, in his grandmother's living room. Mormor ad given him one of her rings for Chloe after they'd been dating, just in case. Sam even had it in his pocket, as some sort of good luck charm that Chloe would ever even consider marriage at all. She said she wouldn't mind marrying him, for Chloe, was that the same as wanting to marry him?
Sam pulled her up so she was sitting in his lap, so he could look at her without craning his neck. "Chloe, do you want to marry me?" Sam asked carefully, assuming she saw the distinction in the question.

On one hand, Chloe had known all along that Sam wasn't going anywhere. Whether she decided to marry him or not, he was around for the long haul, and he'd made that clear enough by now. But somehow that didn't feel like enough. Even as he told her that no other girl could take him away from her, she didn't change her mind. Chloe offered him a small smile, waiting as he continued to process what she'd said. It was a big change from her usual sentiments, so she wasn't surprised that it was taking him a bit to realize she was serious.
Finally,Sam pulled her onto his lap, allowing them both to see one another better. The simple motion told her how serious this was. There weren't a lot of conversations that they needed to be able to watch one another so intently for. At his question, her brow furrowed, and Chloe chewed her bottom lip nervously. It was obvious that he meant to clarify what she'd already told him. Before that, though, she hadn't given much thought to the difference between being willing to marry him and actually wanting to do so. For her, they seemed to be one in the same given the fact that she'd never been willing to marry anyone else.
Letting out a sigh, she offered him a slightly confused look. "Isn't that what I've been saying?" But, of course, it really hadn't been. Letting out a short laugh, she finally replied, "Yes. I want to marry you." The words were barely audible, and she was almost afraid to say them, but there they were, and Chloe found that she wasn't nearly as upset about it as she'd expected to be. Somehow, it hadn't seemed real until she'd said that. Spelling out that she wanted to marry him was more than he could have asked for. Chloe had always been afraid of marriage, against the commitment of forever, but she not only was willing, but she wanted to now. Because of the baby? Knowing Chloe it wasn't just that alone that had made her change her mind. Sam held her eyes for a long time.
He imagined something cute and simple, but something planned. A speech, a gesture, a trip... But somehow, right now, curled up on the couch felt like the right moment. "You know i love you, and i always planned on sticking by you, forever, in whatever way would have me..." Sam fished in his pocket and pulled out a gold ring with several little diamonds on the top. "And now, well, will you marry me?" He asked slowly, looking into her seriously. He was a joker but the severity of the moment wasn't lost on him.

It is more than reasonable to expect that a person might propose after being told that the love of their life wants to marry them. Chloe, however, hadn't quite thought that far ahead. She'd spent enough time and energy determining that she did, in fact, want to marry Sam that she hadn't had any left over to figure out that he just might take the opportunity to propose to her before she thought enough to talk herself out of agreeing to do so. So when he pulled a small gold ring from his pocket, her eyes practically bugged out in surprise. Like with the baby, seeing physical evidence of their potential marriage made things so much more real.
Biting her bottom lip, she stared at the ring for a second before turning her eyes toward Sam. "You're fucking proposing to me?? Right now?" she asked, inexplicably upset by the idea. Yes, she was okay with the idea of marrying him while it was still an idea, but being slapped in the face with the reality of it made things feel so much more intimidating. "I didn't mean it should be right now!" Her cheeks heated up with color again, and she abruptly scrambled from his lap and began pacing around the room.
It took Chloe a couple of seconds to realize how ridiculous she was being. If she did, in fact, want to marry Sam, it shouldn't actually matter when they got engaged. Still, she couldn't slow her pacing. She'd practically worn a furrow into his grandmother's carpet before she managed to stop herself in front of Sam. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh that seemed to help settle her emotions. "Sorry about that," she offered, cracking her eyes open and offering him a sheepish smile. Gingerly, she offered him her hand. "Are you gonna put that thing on me or not?"

His first instinct was to laugh at her outburst. He really should have seen it coming, this was Chloe... hell, this was pregnant Chloe. But he couldn't help but feel a little offended. He'd just put his emotions on the line, taken chance, and all she could do was tell him he was wrong. But somehow, the more she paced around the room the more Sam realized it wasn't actually about him, it was about the idea of the whole thing. The baby, a wedding, marriage... He knew by now that Chloe always blew up when afraid, and he just had to hold onto that so he didn't get mad or upset.
Finally, she came back and stood in front of him. In true Chloe fashion she didn't say 'yes I'll marry you', still avoiding the words. On some level, that made Sam inwardly sigh, but the rest of him was too happy she was saying yes, in her way, and what he wanted was her, the rest shouldn't matter. Sam slipped the ring onto her finger gingerly and pulled her back into his lap so he could kiss her.
"You realize now you won't be just my baby mama, you'll be my wife." Sam teased her lightly, a crooked grin on his face.
